Ballyhalbert History

The Talbots

The name Ballyhalbert is a corrupted form of Bally-talbot, taken from the original name "Talbotstown", named after the Talbot family who settled in the area following the Norman Invasion in 1177 during the reign of Henry II.  The Talbots came from Herefordshire in England and also settled in Co. Antrim and Dublin.

The Talbots in Ireland are mostly associated with Malahide Castle, which was owned by the Talbot family for almost 800 years.  The barony of Talbotstown still exists in Co. Wicklow and in Dublin City Centre there is a "Talbot Street" which is said to have links with the Talbots.
